When I say YouTube, what do you think? Gangham style? Cats playing the piano? Or perhaps realtors’ open houses filmed on a handy-cam with a pirated Musak soundtrack?
Somewhere between those extremes, there are many reasons why video is becoming a must for your business. In fact, it’s right up there with the phone and Twitter. Why? Well, here’s 5 reasons (plus a triple bonus at the end for good measure!).
1. You’ll Have a Way to Represent Your Business as a Visual Calling Card
If social media is the new calling card, then video is that calling card in 3D. Social media is a fantastic way for people to get to know the human (or humans) behind your brand, but it works best when you’re actually present and interactive. And until they perfect human cloning, you’re not always going to be present and accounted for when people want to connect with you.
At those times, you’ll benefit immensely from having content that not only represents you in sight and sound, but that also exemplifies your humanity at the same time.
2. Video is the Most Sought After and Shared Content on the Internet
Try this sometime: Post a link to a blog article or a website and use tools like bit.ly or Google Analytics to track how many clicks that link received. Now post a link to a YouTube video and compare the difference. If you don’t know how to do this, trust me — I’ve done it many times and the results are obvious. For every 2 or 3 clicks your first link gets, your video link will get 10. As soon as people see the word “video” or see the code in the web address that includes reference to YouTube, people know the link will lead them to video and they’ll gravitate to it in droves.
Did you know that YouTube is now the world’s second largest search engine*? How about that by 2014, video will account for 90% of the entire world’s Internet traffic* (*see video, above)? More and more people are bypassing websites, and even bypassing Google; they’re going straight to YouTube to search for videos on topics like “how to make tofurkey,” “how to build a bike,” or “how to use social media to find a job.” Yes, that’s right, billions of searches are conducted every month on the platform for every search term under the sun. Will people see your video when they’re trying to find what they’re searching for?
3. Video Opens up New Channels for You to Promote Your Business
Since the mid 90′s, people have been using websites to promote their businesses. That medium hasn’t really changed a great deal in the last twenty years. In the last four or five years, however social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and dozens more have sprung up, providing businesses additional opportunities to get their messages across beyond the scope of a traditional website.
For example, with Twitter you can include a link to a personal video in your bio (see image, above). As new followers check you out and decide whether to follow you or not, they’ll often click a link in your bio to see more about you before they make up their minds to follow. That means for every new follower you get on Twitter, you’ll also likely get a view on your video.
Similarly, when people check out your profile on platforms like Facebook and Google+, one of the first places they visit (and later spend most time on) is your pictures and video albums page. First impressions count for a lot on social media, so make sure you’re well represented on these platforms with a great selection of personal and marketing videos that augment your profile.
Videos can be embedded in blog posts so that you can dovetail off of the regular traffic that’s visiting your website. People are also more likely to spend more time on your blog (increasing your search engine optimization) if you include videos in your posts. Configuring your blog posts with proper authorship tags can also help with your search engine optimization and may result in your video clips showing up right on Google’s search results page. Are you starting to see how strategic video marketing is much more than just having another video on YouTube?
4. You’ll Differentiate Yourself From Your Competition
Despite the obvious value of video in your marketing mix, most businesses — and particularly small, and local businesses — still don’t have any marketing videos representing their brands. Perhaps you’ve heard the marketing battle cry: “Content is King!” That phrase is even more apt today as every 2 days, more new information is created than in the past 10,000 years!
It’s easier than ever to be a content creator — as opposed to just a content consumer. While your competitors are spending time watching YouTube videos, you can be creating them! Think about it. Have you seen a marketing video from your competitor? What your answer, it only serves to reiterate the fact that it’s high time you got started on creating your own, right?
5. Video Is the Most Powerful Way to Tell a Story Online
Humans have been telling stories to each other since the dawn of time. And the first viral video? It was when Og invited all his fellow cave dwellers to come check out this new thing he discovered called fire. Talk about captivating imagery! Talk about a catalyst to help people share their lives with others. It’s also quite likely that when Og started to use his fire pit to show off the latest and greatest spear he created, most of his cavemates lost interest and went off to crate fires of their own.
If you haven’t guessed it already, video is the fire of our present day. It’s a medium through which the most compelling (and unfortunately sometimes the most inane) stories are told. What story would you rather be known for, the one that empties the cave in a hurry or the one that people gravitate toward? The one that alienates its audience or the one where they’re greeted with warmth and encouraged to participate?
The best salespeople know that selling is most successful when it’s less about the product and more about the people behind it. How can ‘Product X’ help you? What needs of yours can ‘Product Y’ address? Forget the old adages that selling is telling, or that selling is as simple as ABC (“Always Be Closing”). Those tactics are for an era that’s long past its expiration date. Instead, focus on how your brand and your products and services, and how you – from one human to another, can help your customer. Now THAT’s a FIRE!
